Does Subaru use transponder keys?

The first Subaru transponder key appeared in 2005 with the Imprezza, Forrester, Legacy and Outback. All other models followed shortly when some adopt a laser cut key.

Since 2009 all models use an encrypted sidewinder transponder or a smart key with a push to start ignition. Subaru uses the (Keyless Access with Push-Button Start) technology as either standard or optional equipment. This proximity key contain a chip that works with a battery.

Every time the key inserted to the ignition keyhole, the key emit a RFID signal with an encrypted code. The immmobilizer check that the code emitted by the key match the one stored in it's memory. If the code is not recognized, the fuel-pump is shut down and the vehicle will no ignite.

There is no on-board interface to duplicate Subaru transponder keys by yourself. To program the key, a dedicated diagnostic tools, programmers are required.
