In 2007 few models started using the keyless device either standard or optional equipment on various model and years.

Why does Maserati use transponder keys?

Transponder key provide vehicles with a higher security level against theft. Transponder deter and prevent theft by eliminating the option of ‘hot wiring’ the car using a discrete code. This makes breaking the door and ignition lock ineffective! If the car computer doesn’t recognize the key microchip code, it won’t start.

How does Maserati transponder and immobilizer work?

Maserati use the CODE immobilizer on key ignition and the Sentry Key Immobilizer System on a push to start ignition. Those immobilisers prevents unauthorized operation of the vehicle by disabling the engine. The system consist of a transponder key or a Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter, a RF (Radio Frequency) receiver and an ignition switch. Initially all components are expressly programmed with the same code.

When the ignition key turns to the RUN position, the security lights light up for a bulb check. The chip inside the key transmits a coded RFID signal to the ECU. If the ECU recognize the signal, the CODE and warning light on the instrument panel turns off and the engine allows to start.

Maserati immobilisers uses the 'rolling code' system. Each time the vehicle starts, the code on the key changes to eliminate cloning of keys.

How to duplicate Maserati keys and remotes?

Key ignition Maserati supplied with two black master and one red valet key. The master key can be used for all functions and the valet used for ignition alarm activation/deactivation. A push to start Maserati is supplied with 2 RKE keyless entry devices.

Making new or re-setting original keys can only be performed at an authorized Maserati dealer or a locksmith. Programming a key to start the car requires Maserati scan tool (or other after-market programmer).

Ordering additional Maserati keys requires a personal ID, registration and documents proving ownership of the vehicle. In addition, all keys in your possession should be onsite for a reprogramming. Codes of any key or and RKE transmitters that are not present for the procedure will be deleted from the memory. This will prevent lost or stolen keys from being used.

Sentry Key Immobilizer requires 2 functional keys in order to register additional keys into the system. If only one key is left or less, special programming equipment is needed to register new keys. It is highly recommended to get a spare 3rd key made and programmed for your Maserati.

Once a Maseraty key has been programmed to a given vehicle, it cannot be programmed again for use on any other vehicle.

Maserati dont use the VIN number to program or get codes to the key, since the key is read only and cant save the VIN. The PIN provided with the key is the code used to enter learning mode and the keys are programmed in the ECU.

Few locksmiths can clone keys, however the cloned keys will have a problem to work together with the original. With the rollong code system, every time the key is used, the ECU sent a code for the key to use on the next time. The cloned key will have problem starting the vehicle, since it dosn't know the next code in the original key. A clone key is not recommended, but can be a back-up for a lost original key,

Can you program a Maserati remote yourself?

Sometime the remote can lose sync with the car and stop function. This is common after replacing batteries in the vehicle or the key or maybe on a new remote that was never programmed before. Maserati offers an onboard interface to re-program/program remotes using an onboard procedure following the steps:

1. Sit inside the vehicle with the keys in hand.
2. Lock and unlock the car 8 times and watch the indicator lights flash and the red alarm light will come on.
3. The indicators flash will shut and only the alarm light will come on indicating learning mode.
4. While in this learn mode click all the remotes that you want the car to use.

Note 1: You might need someone standing outside to tell you if the outside lights were flashing.
Note 2: Sometimes the doors lock automatically instead of lights flash to indicate learn mode.
Note 3: Pushing a button that you have already pushed exit learn mode and the immobilisation system goes back to normal operation.

Lost/stolen key replacement! What to do?

If your Maserati made before 2001, your vehicle use a key with no chip. Find a dealer, locksmith or even a hardware store with a car key cutting machine and get a new key made by the VIN.

One exception to the above is if the ignition changed and is not in sync with the VIN. In the second case a locksmith need to replace the ignition again or to make a new key by reading the key grooves inside the ignition cylinder. This process is more complex and requires a locksmith with the right machine and experience.

If you lost all your keys to a Maserati that built after 2001, Maserati recommend contacting a dealer or a locksmith. They will need your license and title as a proof of ownership. Using the PIN number from the card supplied with the car, they will reprogram a new key.
