How to duplicate Ferrari keys and remotes?

A new Ferrari 355, 360, 456, 550 and 575 comes from the factory with three remote keys, one red master key and two black slaves. The black and the red keys works the same, but the red key also hold the ECU Personal Identification Number (PIN). The PIN has a special function in putting the vehicle into learning mode to programm duplicate keys.

The PIN is also printed on a small card provided with the set of 3 keys. The PIN can also be used to start the car if the key is lost or runs out of battery. If the PIN is lost, you can buy a complete new matched set of three keys and a new PIN and set of 3 new keys from Ferrari for between $1000-$1400.

Using onboard memorisation procedure up to maximum of 7 keys can be programmed, including those already in your possession. To duplicate the key you need the key CODE, PIN and proof of ownership for the vehicle.

To duplicate a Ferrari key you have 3 options, the dealer or a locksmith or online. Getting a spare key from the dealership is a good option for a good quality OEM keys. The locksmith will be a good option if you are looking for the convenience. Getting copies of keys online can save you hundreds of dollars, but requires some basic technical skills.

Ferrari dont use the VIN number to program or get codes to the key, since the key is read only and cant save the VIN. The PIN provided with the red key is the code used to enter learning mode and the keys are programmed in the ECU.

With the rollong code system, every time the key is used, the ECU sent a code for the key to use on the next time. Can you program a Ferrari keys yourself?

If you have the red key and the PIN code, you can program duplicate keys using an onboard procedure following the steps below:

1. Insert the red key and wait at least 20 seconds with the ignition key in off.
2. For each digit in the PIN code, turn the key to on and back to off within less than 2 seconds x times. Where x is the digit in the PIN. Wait 5 second between each digit in the PIN.
3. After you enter the PIN, Wait 5 seconds and turn the key back to on.
4. After 2 seconds with the key in the on position, the alarm (LED) will go on and off.
5. Turn the key from on to off and back to on in less than 2 seconds and wait 2 seconds.
6. Repeat the key and LED cycles 10 times.
7. After 10 cycle, turn the key back on and the LED should start flashing.
8. Press the red key button constantly until the LED accelerates its flashing and then release the button.
9. The LED should resume flashing slowly to confirm accepting of the key.
10. Press the 1st black keys button and wait for the LED flashing to accelerate again.
11. Release the 1st black key button and watch the LED flashing slowly confirming the 1st black key.
12. Press the 2nd black keys button and wait for the LED flashing to accelerate again.
13. Release the 2nd black key button and watch the LED flashing slowly confirming the 2nd black key.
14. The Alarm ECU is now recognize all three remotes

Lost/stolen key replacement! What to do?

If your Ferrari made before 1998, your vehicle use a key with no chip. Find a dealer, locksmith or even a hardware store with a car key cutting machine and get a new key made by the VIN.

One exception to the above is if the ignition changed and is not in sync with the VIN. In the second case a locksmith need to replace the ignition again or to make a new key by reading the key grooves inside the ignition cylinder. This process is more complex and requires a locksmith with the right machine and experience.

If you lost all your keys to a Ferrari that built after 2001, Ferrari recommend contacting a dealer or a locksmith. They will need your license and title as a proof of ownership. Using the PIN number from the card supplied with the car, they will reprogram a new set of 3 keys.
