Does Audi use transponder keys?

Audi started using sidewinder transponder keys in 2001 and most vehicles adopt the use of transponder keys. The Audi A4 is an exception which did not had transponders until 2002.

In 2006 few models started using the key-less entry based on the Keyless Entry & Keyless Start (KESSY). This technology also use transponders and is either standard or optional equipment on various model and years.

Why does Audi use transponder keys?

How does Audi transponder and immobilizer work?

An immobilized Audi consist of immobilizer, RFID transponder key and an antena around the ignition switch. When the key turned in the ignition, the antenna induces a voltage in the transponder chip. The chip send a unique encrypted code signal to the immobilizer. If the immobiliser recognize the code, it sends back a random number to the key. The key and immobiliser both calculate the codes. If the codes match on both sides, normal engine starting is allowed.

How to duplicate Audi keys and remotes?

Audi key programming is done with VW proprietary diagnostic equipment and programmers. The process of making a spare key also requires a unique PIN code obtained from Audi. All previous keys must to be present for the duplication process.

1. Insert new cut key into the ignition and turn the it to the “On” position. (Do not crank the motor).
2. Step out of your vehicle and close the driver’s door.
3. Insert the primary key into the driver door lock and turn it to the right. This will manually lock the door. Once the door is locked, remove the key.
4. Press the “Unlock” button the primary key remote hold it down for at least one second and release it.
5. Open the door and turn the ignition back to the “Off” position.
6. The new remote should be programmed to the vehicle.

Lost/stolen key replacement! What to do?

If your Audi made before 2000, your vehicle use a key with no chip. Find a dealer, locksmith or even a hardware store with a car key cutting machine and get a new key made by the VIN.

One exception to the above is if the ignition changed and is not in sync with the VIN. In the second case a locksmith need to replace the ignition again or to make a new key by reading the key grooves inside the ignition cylinder. This process is more complex and requires a locksmith with the right machine and experience.

If you lost all your keys to a vehicle that uses transponder key, the motor vehicle's computer should be reprogrammed. The immobiliser will accept a new key and reject the old one safeguarding the disabling of the old/lost/stolen key.
